Thus, they can take both chances and challenges into account. ![]() The workshop provides hands-on experiences and allows participants to get a holistic view on technology. The concept aims at showing the benefits of MES from an engineering point of view as well as enabling works councils to survey implementation processes of MES in the sense of participatory ergonomics. IG Metall and Ruhr-University Bochum developed an interdisciplinary workshop concept for works councils taking place in a close-to-reality setting of the LPS learning factory. Their implementation changes workplaces and work organization, affects issues of employment, remuneration, data privacy protection, working tasks, qualification requirements, working time, as well as safety and health protection. MES are an integral part of the operational implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies. The concept was developed by IG Metall (“Industrial Union of metalworkers”) and Ruhr-University Bochum (“LPS, Chair of Production Systems” and “Office of Cooperation RUB/IGM”) considering the technical as well as the sociological and didactical perspective. The addressed target groups are trade union representatives and works councils. ![]() This paper gives an insight into a learning factory concept on a rather abstract topic: Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) as the basic IT-infrastructure for industrial internet application. The program does not only contribute to a specific further qualification of workers’ representatives for the challenges of the transforming working world but also to a general enhancement of their position as experts on plant level. Experts from the institutions involved as well as external professionals develop and conduct the modules in interdisciplinary teams. The modules take place in three different locations: the LPS learning and research factory of RUB, the main campus of RUB and the IG Metall Education Center. The 30 ECTS of the program can be recognized for future study programs. They are enabled to proactively participate in and shape decision-making processes. In total, workers’ representatives receive a holistic, extensive qualification and hands-on learning experiences in the context of the digital transformation of work in the course of nine three-day modules. The modules address a wide range of topics including industry 4.0, resource efficiency, personnel management, data security, qualification, and design of working conditions. This approach helps in dealing with processes of transformation that the production industry is facing as it is not only altering technology but also the organization of work. that a multi-faceted view on technological, sociological, organizational and didactical issues in the context of digital transformation is chosen. This paper gives an overview of an interdisciplinary scientific teaching concept addressed at workers’ representatives developed in a cooperation of three institutions of Ruhr-University Bochum (Chair of Production Systems (LPS), Office of Cooperation RUB/IGM and Academy of RUB) and the IG Metall Education Center in Sprockhövel. The evidence from the case study is considered to expand the current understanding of Learning Factories implementation pathways. Hence, this paper presents a detailed case study conducted between 20 of a Learning Factory phased implementation that continuously and iteratively evolved in terms of resources, operation, partnerships, and teaching applications. In a phased implementation, the demonstrated results from one phase may support budget, resources, and partnership acquisition for the following stages. In these cases, a phased Learning Factory implementation may be considered. However, the necessary resources and budget for a comprehensive Learning Factory deployment may not be fully available upfront in some contexts with limited means. The existing models and cases are mainly based on the Learning Factory implementation as a single integrated project initiative. Regarding the implementation process, a few models and several case studies are provided. Existing Learning Factories definitions and morphology are already well established. Over the last decade, Learning Factories literature has evolved significantly.
